Terry Bouricius has been selected to give a TED Talk as part of TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures, an event focused on the future of democracy as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary.
Terry will speak about sortition — democratic government by randomly selected citizens’ assemblies — and the central idea behind his book, Democracy Without Politicians: Government By the People: that elections do not produce rule by the people. They produce politicians.
A former elected official in Burlington, Vermont and the Vermont House of Representatives, Terry has spent decades working on election reform and developing new models of democratic government. His work argues that real democracy requires more than choosing leaders. It requires giving ordinary people a direct share of public power.
